What HaPPENS when you mispellllll bias...

A rough sketch of the students' ideas:

suzan
automatic body functions
space = breathing
all parts of the letter can correspond to the human body functions
e.g. descender can be the smell
don't lose the link to human functions

juriaan
secondary functions, walking, reading
learning how to read is automation
learning new rules, putting them in a schedule you already have in your head
making the learning easier, logical: five rows, coded grid telling whether a letter is a vowel or a consonant, capital or lowercase.
whole process of learning how to read is the automation
once you learn it, it is automated
looks like braille

elenna first flash morphing: two b's drawn by hand and then computer would mix them together automatically.
how would a computer do it?
other idea: connect-the-dots: small numbers next to points, so you have to connect them. maybe the points alone are enough. lots of text will look like writing.
with just the dots, it's easy to figure out. with the flash font, you can't tell what's happening.
by using the dots, it gives the notion of automation.
if you become blind, you don't have to learn another system, because you're already using points.

elissenna
wanted to show the functions that machines have, save money, save ink
patterns to fit the more letters in a minimal space. simple.
different keyboard here than in spain. we have a lot of knowledge about the keyboard that we forget, e.g. if we see a capital A, we know that someone has pressed shift.
The alphabet means sound, punctuation, mark. Drawing a letter with all the meanings of this letter connected to it. e.g. "M" can be male, men bathroom, ...
Millions of meanings and reasons for each letter.
"looks like you're trying to write a letter"

good & bad
every letter is made up out of lines
(think barcodes, soundwaves, morse code)
each section of a letter .... ?
other idea:
automatic positive, automatic negative
pictograms

hannennea (question marks)
thinking about a world where everything is automated.
everything is then obvious, it's an easy life, no need to think. behind the automation lie the problems.
watch out for automation, it can't get you to paradise, "i have serious question about it".

===luidruchtig bij presentatie===
library idea -- problem solving to automate something
how to make a font that would automate me to make it short and clear, and skip all the stuff i don't need.
magic fonts that are growing by themselves,
make a font that when you write, every letter that you add, you have to press more than one button. because it gets physically so difficult to write, you would make shorter messages.
letterforms that are simplified and made more automatic, so to remove all redundant information, and leave the most essential things. it is not the most clear letter that you can make.
the origins of the original keyboard. The qwerty is made because of typing machines, and secretaries were typing too fast, so they had to relayout the keyboard so they couldn't type that fast and wouldn't jam the keys.
letters would be half a letter.

censorship
== lang haar, zwart gekleed ===

barcode idea
font that makes you read faster.
readable in traditional way or not?
other idea:
combining western typography (straight) with arabic typography/calligraphy (natural). a font that both westerners and arabs could understand. a font that would be easier to learn by both sides.
(you'd have account for reading right-to-left or left-to-right, perhaps by using palindromes)

mikko (den andere, dus niet van antwerpen)
every letter of made with a maximum of 2 strokes.
a program where you can write sentences, and then returns a font that represents your handwriting.
it also learns you how to write, and the computer can write as well.
automating the automation
looks a lot like a classic typeface.

==== dieje gast naast mij ====
books that read themselves -- wider concept than just a typeface
typeface that reads itself.
every type has a face.
if the book is reading it, it should be mirrorred.
letters are like people are standing in a line. all people know one letter, and they have to tell to eachother what letter they have, and then the last person knows the word.
lucas: when a type looks at itself, it is different from what you're showing

== guy in red ==
every time you write something, the letters are not the same
it's about ligatures, it already works. by using lots of ligatures, you can create a text that looks hand-written.

== "this is really great" ==
"i have been destroying all day"
concept: failure in automation
really destroyed font, but still readable. capital letters and smaller ones. maybe the final font might use only the capitals.
"i will continue destroying"
process: take a typeface, type all the letters, go to photoshop and start pixelating them and applying filters.

mikko (van antwerpen)
bringing the flavour of foreign countries in finland. different cultures have interesting things.
what could they bring to the finish language? you can make text with a flavour of the foreign countries. cultural and spelling mistakes.
the shapes of the alphabet are mixed too -- greek people add cyrillic shapes to the languages.
if you would write a whole word, it returns a word with mistakes in it. "the new finnish".
ultimate integration tool. the more foreign people will come into finland, the more the font will become more international.

breath
i don't like the idea of automation, quite negative.
something appearing hand-written, that could be done through the computer
abbreviations, SMS messages
trying to find some shortcuts, eliminating the characterset.
depending on the context, "y" could be replaced by "j".
later --> l8r : split up the number 8, and mix that in with different letters "t" could then be a part of that letter 8.
all lowercase 18:46 lucas: "Maybe we should tell it know: we kept a secret."
Lucas introduces the fact that the students will have to work together on a maximum of 3 fonts. Every one of them should rank all the designs, and all numbers will be counted.
